Mesh members Ruth Thomas and Barbara Rowell are excited to offer a short series of printmaking and bookbinding workshops embracing themes of recycling and reworking, from the /Ru:Barb/ Studio in Fenton Barns Village, East Lothian,

to coincide with the Mesh and Friends group exhibition:

Printmaking without a Press/Introduction to Artists’ Bookmaking Workshop

This one-day course will introduce a range of simple but effective printmaking techniques that can be done without the use of a press.

 

Participants will have the opportunity to learn a variety of printmaking techniques which will include using inked Perspex and Gelli Plates to make monoprints, and applying organic and found materials onto gelatine and agar surfaces to achieve sensitive and unique prints. These prints will then used to create a range of unique folded artists’ books.

 

Cost: £55, including all materials.

 

Date: Sunday 30th October, 2016

 

Location: This course will be held at The /Ru:Barb/ Studio, in the ‘Kiln and  Cutter’ Workshop,  Fenton Barns Village, East Lothian, EH39 5BW

 

Timing: 10am – 4.30pm.

There will be a short break for lunch. Participants may bring a packed lunch or visit the nearby café in Fenton Barns

 

What to Bring: Course members may wish to bring their own sketching pencils and sketchbooks or notebooks. An apron or overall would be useful

Developing Artists’ Books

This two-day workshop will introduce several different ways to construct handmade books and develop their content.

 

Over the two days, there will be opportunities to learn various structures, including a range of folded constructions and binding methods including concertina books with inclusions, Japanese stab binding and Coptic stitch.

 

You will also learn how to make covers and endpapers depending on your choice of projects, and use printmaking techniques including gelatine printing and collagraphs.

 

The course will be tailored to each individual course member and participants are encouraged to bring their own artwork, photographs and sketchbooks as a source for their ideas. It is anticipated that at least two books will be made including one handmade stitched sketchbook.

 

Cost: £100, including all materials.
